ABOUT

I have always enjoyed writing, the main problem is I have never felt I've been 'good' at it. I had another blog (matttalkslife.blogspot.com) which stopped a while ago because it got a bit stale for me. By that I mean, I felt it was quite hard to post often enough where the days weren't just going to work and relaxing in the evening.

So some background info about me, I am an IT Engineer (fixing stuff) by day and nerd by night. I have always enjoyed gaming, in all forms and the surrounding world.

In terms of my aspirations, you may imagine changes all the time but I would like to have a book published one day if I ever finish one. I would like to stream/upload videos to a small community so its not a job but for fun. I would like to be a Microsoft certified engineer when I can find the money.

This blog will be about general 'nerdy' things like games I've been playing, things I am looking forward to and probably what I am most excited about - recording our DnD adventure(s). It'll be titled 'A roll of the die' which sounds cheesy but if you imagine Morgan Freeman saying it sounds pretty awesome.

Stand Up To Cancer 24 Hour Game Marathon

I've always said that I would like to do more for Charity, I was just never sure how. I am not exactly great at running, and I am already known at work for wearing colourful shirts and ties so that wouldn't be anything out of the ordinary. I was walking past a bus stop one day around a month ago and I saw "Stand Up To Cancer" which I know is Channel 4's annual event - and at the bottom it said "Game On". I thought that sounded interesting, and had a little Google and there it was - my niche in charity fun raising. Playing video games! So I spitballed a couple of ideas, and settled on doing a 24 hour marathon, playing through the Dark Souls series and Pokemon Omega Ruby with a friend, hopefully ending on Bloodborne. This then developed into a 24 hour live stream in the shed/cabin in the back garden as to not disturb anyone. First we had to get the miracle of the internet into the shed, which at first seemed quite simple, we had a 30ft ethernet cable...

A Roll Of The Dice - Chapter 3 - Once, Twice, Three Times An Encounter...

We rejoin our intrepid explorers as they gather themselves from the previous weeks fighting and falling and spiders... Why are there always spiders? And not just small ones, the type that would hit you with a newspaper. The party sets out in a direction to an oddly named place to try and return their mushroom friend to his home... That was a close one - I guess we're also quite lucky that the ooze was polite enough to try and kill us another time. Jim Jar has a rough idea where we are and gives us some options. There's a dwarf stronghold, a deep gnome settlement and a city of humanoid fish. All are a substantial distance away as we're on foot - no amount of fudging is going to change that. We choose to head south, to the city of Sloopadoop? Sploopdadoop? The place where the first people live is how I will remember it. We choose to divide up the jobs, a lookout, a guide, a mapper and a forager. And Helga's there to fumbling around in the dark - Quornian has bee...

Flatliners - Film Review

I have a Cineworld pass and love films, I like to go to the cinema as much as I can because you get a better experience with the big screens and the surround sound... And there's ice cream there - I think I might like ice cream more than films so it's win-win really. The best thing about the Cineworld card is giving you a different mindset, there are a lot of films - such as Flatliners - that I likely wouldn't have seen without it. Cinema tickets are quite expensive now, and would put me off going to see a film I was unfamiliar with or had poor reviews - ironically these have been some of the better films I have seen. It does help that I am also easily pleased when it comes to the big wide world of cinema. I'll just chuck it in here, but of course, there will be SPOILERS from about here on! A film I saw about a month ago was Flatliners, which was very much a spur of the moment decision in our little group. We sat in the car, huddled around an iPhone screen to w...
